About
The Tom Green County Historical Society is dedicated to preserving the history of the Concho Valley. And, what a colorful history to preserve! Spanish priests first visited the area in 1629, some 300 years before the Republic of Texas was born. Since then, the land that became Tom Green County has been home to buffalo soldiers and buffalo hunters, cowboys and sheepherders, Comanches and Confederates. Estblished by the Texas Legislature in 1874, Tom Green County is the fathers of West Texas as some 66 modern Texas counties were carved out of its original 60,000-plus square miles of territory. Tom Green County embodies western history and the challenges of a growing nation. The Butterfield Overland Mail Stage Line passed through as did the Goodnight-Loving Trail and the Santa Fe Railroad. The country's military heritage is strong from Fort Concho in the 1970s to Goodfellow Air Force Base today. Above all, Tom Green County is a region of contrast from drought to flood, from the boom to bust, from the mundane to the heroic. Please join us in exploring and preserving the region's dramatic history by joining the Tom Green County Historical Society. |
